Rhinophyma is a skin condition that results in thickened skin and a tumor-like, bulbous nose appearance.

What is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is a skin condition that results in thickened skin and a tumor-like, bulbous nose appearance. Medical professionals commonly refer to Rhinophyma as a form of severe rosacea. Symptoms of Rhinophyma include extremely oily skin, bumpy skin, thick skin, blood vessel problems, and an enlarged nose. Rhinophyma occurs due to the slow hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands at the front of the nose.

Rhinophyma Consultation

At a Rhinophyma consultation, Dr. Yamasaki provides patients with pre-surgical and post-surgical instructions. She approaches each patient with care and understanding. The initial consultation is an essential step for her to evaluate both the exterior and interior of the nose, confirm the rhinophyma diagnosis and determine the best method of treatment. She may take a skin biopsy (under local anesthetic) if your diagnosis is unclear, to determine the type and grade of your rhinophyma. Dr. Yamasaki will discuss with you the treatment she advises, and what each treatment or combined technique will involve.

The Ideal Candidate for Rhinophyma Treatment

The ideal candidate for treatment is someone who has moderate to severe Rhinophyma, but anyone with the condition should consider treatment. This is generally considered a treatment for a severe skin condition. If you feel your nose is enlarged, your nasal airways are obstructed, or your breathing or vision are impaired, then treatment may be a good idea. If you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable, or that your social life is negatively impacted by how you feel about your nose, then treatment may be able to help.

Rhinophyma Treatment Cost

During your consultation, Dr. Yamasaki will discuss the cost with you as cost varies greatly depending on the severity of each patient’s case, and what treatment is selected for that particular case. As each treatment is uniquely tailored to the patient’s level of Rhinophyma, the cost depends on what procedure or combination of procedures the patient receives. It is possible that medical insurance will cover part of the cost.

Financing Options

Dr. Yamasaki recommends bringing any questions to the initial consultation to ensure you get the answers you need. Make sure to discuss financing options like Care Credit with Dr. Yamasaki if necessary.

Rhinophyma Treatments

Dr. Yamasaki is highly experienced in treating a variety of skin conditions and customizes each patient’s treatment based on the evaluation done at your initial consultation. She may decide your nose only needs one treatment, or she may recommend using combined techniques to maximize results. Depending on the treatment, you will be on local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or in some cases, general anesthesia. Treatment should take about one hour. Here is a brief overview of the Rhinophyma procedures that can be effectively performed:
Each of these methods helps Dr. Yamasaki conduct her treatment of Rhinophyma in a safe and consistent manner. To know what the most effective treatment will be for your case, Dr. Yamasaki needs to inspect your nose in person during a consultation.

Rhinophyma Treatment Recovery

Dr. Yamasaki gives her patients specific post-surgical/post-treatment directions during consultation. Patients should prepare for 7-10 days of recovery. The first 48 hours there is a strong sensation on the nose (similar to a strong sunburn) due to the raw surfaces newly uncovered. After that, there will be mild discomfort with bruising, tenderness, mild swelling, and scabbing. Patients are advised to not pick at the scabs and to let them naturally peel away on their own (this will take about 3 weeks). Patients are also advised to stay out of the sun, as sun damage so soon after treatment can lead to a reddish tint to the skin, something that Rhinophyma patients are already trying to get rid of. This is the final stage of your treatment, and it is equally important.

Post-Treatment Recommendations

Treat the area with vaseline or Aquaphor, or other prescribed ointments. Dr. Yamasaki will provide you with a dressing to use on the entire raw nasal surface that has been treated. Please do not use a lotion unless you have discussed it with Dr. Yamasaki. Your skin may start to feel itchy after the first week, but this means it’s healing. Avoid touching it as much as possible to avoid undesirable complications and risk factors. Follow-up treatments are recommended.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Common Rhinophyma Surgical Treatment Questions

Fair-skinned men or women aged 50 to 70 suffering from any degree of rhinophyma should consider treatment. However, earlier treatment leads to better results. Patients of all ages are encouraged to ask about Rhinophyma treatment.
Complications are rare but include altered sensation in the treated area, bleeding, infection, lumpiness, or change in skin color.
A patient’s “final appearance” is typically seen within 2-3 months after treatment.
Rhinophyma treatment results are long-lasting with rare recurrence.
This can be best determined during a consultation with Dr. Yamasaki. What we find is that most patients know if they have Rhinophyma as it is a very visible and unique skin condition.
