Diet and exercise is one of the most effective ways to achieve a healthier lifestyle and combat excess body fat. However, due to genetics or other reasons, some areas of the body may develop stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to lifestyle changes. The fat under the chin (“submental fat”) and in the neck can be particularly difficult areas to address because submental fat can increase with weight gain but is typically unaffected by diet, exercise, or weight loss.
Liposuction is a transformative procedure that can help to reduce the excess fat in many regions of the body, including under the chin and in the neck. This can improve the contour of the chin and jawline and create a lighter, more chiseled appearance to your facial features. Liposuction can be used toreshape different body areas by removing excess fat in the treatment area. Liposuction treatments are fast, minimally invasive procedures that can deliver long-lasting results. Depending on the patient and other potential adjunctive procedures, neck liposuction can usually be done in the office with minimal discomfort.

What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, commonly referred to as “lipo” or “body contouring,” is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat from targeted areas of the body. Fat deposits form when the body takes in more calories than it expends. Hormonal factors, such as insulin, play a significant role in promoting fat storage. Meanwhile, genetics, lifestyle choices, and metabolic rate influence the distribution and amount of fat stored in the body. In some locations, such as under the chin and in the neck, fatty deposits often do not disappear despite a healthy lifestyle. This is when liposuction can help.
Liposuction is a targeted treatment to remove fatty deposits from stubborn problem areas. Each liposuction treatment is specially curated with the patient’s specific anatomy and goals in mind. Liposuction will achieve permanent fat removal in the treated areas, as the fat cells that are removed do not regenerate. However, liposuction does not prevent the remaining fat cells from expanding if you experience weight changes in the future.
In some cases, liposuction is performed along with fat grafting so that fat is removed from one body area and injected into another body area that appears hollowed or sunken. In this situation, liposuction can be done in combination with other surgeries such as a facelift or neck lift to further enhance the overall results. Dr. Yamasaki performs liposuction in New Jersey & Philadelphia to help patients achieve the best possible results and regain a healthy and youthful appearance.

Liposuction Consultation
The consultation for a liposuction treatment with Dr. Yamasaki includes a thorough discussion of your goals and evaluation of your specific anatomy in order to ensure your treatment plan is designed to achieve thebest possible results. Dr. Yamasaki will review your overall health history and medications as part of the consultation. All individual concerns will be noted and addressed, and all your questions will be answered before a treatment plan is finalized.
Every part of the treatment plan is customized to meet the specific goals of each patient. The best candidates for liposuction are those in good overall health, non-smokers, and do not have any medical or skin conditions that affect good wound healing. Those with excellent skin and soft tissue quality also tend to have the best results. Depending on your specific concerns, additional procedures may be recommended along with liposuction.
Dr. Yamasaki will outline the specific steps involved in your treatment plan and explain the procedural details with you. She will review before and aftercare instructions and also answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you may benefit from otherprocedures in order to achieve your desired goals, she will discuss this with you during your consultation.
The Ideal Candidate for a Liposuction Procedure
Patients who are considering liposuction should be in good overall health, have no bleeding or bruising issues, and be at a stable goal weight. Skin health is also an important factor. Patients without scarring problems and with good skin tone and elasticity typically have the best results. This is because, after liposuction, the skin must shrink and mold to the new body contour in order to maximize the benefits of the procedure.
Other patient factors that improve outcome after liposuction include::
- No severe or chronic health concerns
- No history of excessive scarring, keloids, trauma/radiation, or other skin problems, particularly in the target area
- No history of poor wound healing or medical factors that lead to poor wound healing (e.g. smoking, diabetes, immune suppression)
- No history of bleeding disorders or not on any blood thinning medication at the time of the procedure (i.e. it would be medically safe to stop blood thinning medications for the procedure)
- Have maintained a stable target weight for at least a year
- Able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight after treatment
- Ableto follow Dr. Yamasaki’s before and aftercare instructions
- Have realistic expectations for what the end results will be
Preparation for Liposuction
Dr. Yamasaki will provide instructions regarding any pre-procedure preparation that is required in advance of the procedure.
The face, neck and/or treatment area needs to be clean with no lotions or makeup used the day of the procedure. Sun exposure should be avoided before and after the procedure to protect the skin of the surgical areas and maximize healing.
On the day of the surgery, dress comfortably and follow any other specific instructions that have been provided. Patients should follow Dr. Yamasaki’s before and aftercare instructions, which will provide specific information regarding how to prepare and what to expect in the initial recovery process following the surgery to ensure the best possible results.
Patients should not be on any blood thinning medications at the time of the procedure. If you take blood thinning medications that are required for a medical condition, please discuss this with Dr. Yamasaki at your consultation so a plan can be formulated in advance of the procedure.
Before & After Liposuction
The Liposuction (Fat Removal) Procedure
Liposuction can most often be done with local anesthesia in the office. In some situations, sedation or general anesthesia may be used. This is usually reserved for more complicated surgeries when multiple procedures will be done simultaneously. The ability to use various anesthesia techniques will help keep pain to a minimum while ensuring the best results are achieved for each treatment.
During The Procedure
After The Procedure
A compression dressing is generally worn for 1 to 2 weeks following the surgery to minimize swelling and keep the skin and soft tissue tight as it heals into its new position. Dr. Yamasaki and her team will review all procedural steps and ensure patients know what to expect before, during, and after their liposuction treatment.
Liposuction Recovery
Dr. Yamasaki is a skilled and experienced facial plastic surgeon who has helped countless patients obtainhe results they are looking for usingstate-of-the-art techniques. She will guide you through the recovery process after your procedure. Following liposuction treatment, patients can expect mild side effects that generally include swelling, bruising, and mild pain.
Recovery after Liposuction
The compression garment provided after the surgery should be worn for a week or two to help the skin heal into its new position as all the swelling and bruising subsides. Patients are encouraged to use ice and keep the head and neck elevated for the first week after surgery. Pain is typically a mild. If pain medications are needed, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) are usually adequate. You may also be prescribed a round of antibiotics to help reduce the risk of an infection as the body heals. You may also be prescribed a course of anti-inflammatory medications to help with swelling after surgery. Dr. Yamasaki will discuss this with you at the consultation and time of your procedure if you require prescriptions.
In general, most patients can return to non-strenuous work and day-to-day activities within a few days to one week after surgery. You will notice significant improvement in swelling and possible bruising during the first one to two weeks after surgery. You may gradually resume exercise at two weeks after surgery once cleared by Dr. Yamasaki to do so.
Results after Liposuction
Most patients will notice a significant improvement in neck contours by one month after surgery. There may be some subtle swelling that continues to improve after this time. Full results are seen within a few months and are generally long-lasting as long as weight and skin quality remain stable.
Patients are strongly encouraged to follow healthy lifestyle practices (e.g. nutritious diet, regular exercise) and follow a good skincare regimen to avoid fat reaccumulation in the treated areas and preserve skin integrity. All of this helps to preserve the longevity of results from a liposuction procedure.
Cost of Liposuction
The cost of liposuction depends on various different factors. Every patient will have an individualized plan with a different amount of fat being removed, so it is best to discuss the cost of liposuction with Dr. Yamasaki during your consultation.
Like most cosmetic and non-medically necessary surgeries, liposuction is generally not covered by medical insurance.
Ask Dr. Yamasaki and her team about payment plans that are available, such as Care Credit.
