in New Jersey & Philadelphia

Lips can dramatically impact how your face is perceived. Full lips that are plump and smooth provide a more sensual and youthful appearance. As we age, the delicate features of the lips can be significantly affected. The upper lip tends to thin out and the skin above the red lip can lengthen, sometimes creating the illusion of a tense and harsh expression.

Harvard-trained Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Alisa Yamasaki specializes in cosmetic surgery such as lip lift procedures and other facial treatments. She has written textbook chapters and articles on facial rejuvenation and lip restoration. She offers the latest techniques in facial rejuvenation in New Jersey & Philadelphia and is ready to help new patients achieve the luscious, healthy-looking lips they desire.

Lip lift surgery has become one of the most common cosmetic treatments requested today.

What Is Lip Lift Surgery?

Lip lift surgery has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries. Unlike lip fillers, which temporarily volumizes the lips, a lip lift offers a longer lasting rejuvenation of the mouth area. A lip lift is a minimally invasive procedure that works by shortening the stretched skin of the upper lip and restore a fuller appearance to the red lip. When upper lip sagging is severe, not only does this create a more aged look but it can also hinder one’s ability to smile by partially or fully covering the upper teeth and preventing them from showing. A lip lift can brighten your smile by shortening the distance between the nose and upper lip and allow the upper teeth to show. This can create a more friendly and youthful rejuvenating effect to the lips.

Benefits of Lip Lift

Many times in plastic surgery, less is more. Lip lift surgery uses subtle changes to the upper lip to improve the overall appearance of the lips and mouth, which can also impact the appearance of other facial features such as the mouth and midface. Unlike filler, the results are intended to be permanent.

It is important to remember that the result of a lip lift varies depending on several individual factors. Dr. Yamasaki offers lip lifts in New Jersey & Philadelphia, tailoring the procedure to fit your individual anatomy. Lip lifts have many benefits, including:

The Ideal Candidate for Lip Lift Surgery

Ideal candidates are non-smokers in good health without any history of bleeding disorders or wound healing problems. It is recommended that you complete treatment for other medical conditions prior to proceeding with a lip lift or other cosmetic surgery. If you are on blood thinning medications, please discuss this with Dr. Yamasaki as arrangements will need to be made with your prescribing physician to safely stop blood thinning medications for the lip lift procedure.

The Lip Lift Procedure

Undergoing a lip lift procedure is a straight forward experience, but preparations must be made before the procedure day to ensure the best possible results. Patients need to stop smoking and vaping at least 4 to 8 weeks before and after the procedure. The face and neck should be washed thoroughly with a mild soap on the day of the procedure. Patients should avoid using makeup, sunscreen, lotion, perfumes, or other skin products on the day of the procedure.

The lip lift procedure is most commonly performed in the office using local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes about 45 minutes to around one hour, though additional time may be required if other procedures are being performed at the same time. Dr. Yamasaki will perform the surgery and provide post-procedure wound care instructions.

Recovery From Lip Lift Surgery

Most patients see amazing results from their lip lift procedure and experience temporary swelling and mild discomfort. Most of the swelling typically resolves by 2 weeks after the procedure, at which time the results will begin to shine through. A few guidelines to help with the recovery process after your lip lift surgery:
  • Keep your head elevated and use plenty of ice to the lips for the first few days
  • Avoid strenuous activity and exercise for 2 weeks
  • Avoid straining the lip, excessively pursing the lips, and widely opening the mouth for 2 weeks
  • Avoid irritating the upper lip when brushing or flossing the upper teeth
  • Keep the lips well moisturized and limit outdoor sun exposure – use sunscreen once your incisions have healed
  • Report any issues or concerns you may have to Dr. Yamasaki

Lip Lift Cost

A lip lift surgery is typically cosmetic and therefore not covered by insurance plans. The cost of surgery depends on the complexity and extent of the procedure as well as any additional procedures that may be combined with the lip lift. Financing options such as Care Credit are available, so be sure to discuss this with Dr. Yamasaki’s office to see what may be best for you.

Common Lip Lift Surgery Questions

Anyone who is bothered by elongated skin above the upper lip and/or a thin upper lip may be a candidate for a lip lift. Those who are looking for a more permanent alternative to filler is best suited for this type of procedure. The ideal patients are those who are non-smokers, have good skin quality, have good wound healing (e.g. no history of bad scars or keloids), and are overall in good health. Contact Dr. Yamasaki’s office today for a consultation to see if you may be a good candidate.
The lip lift is a short in-office procedure with minimal downtime. You may have temporary swelling of the lips that significantly resolves by 1 to 2 weeks. Potential side effects include swelling of the skin, bruising, a small chance of infection, and the need for pain medications during the healing process.
You will begin to see the initial results of your lip lift within the first few weeks as swelling and any potential bruising subside. Significant improvements will be noticeable by one to three months. The final results, including the full effect on lip shape and the fading of scars, becomes apparent by three to six months. Following your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions is crucial for achieving the best possible outcome.
The results of a lip lift surgery are generally long-lasting and often considered “permanent.” However, the natural aging process will continue, which may cause subtle changes to the lips along with the rest of the face over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following post-operative care instructions can help preserve the results for many years.
Dr. Yamasaki will evaluate your specific anatomy to determine if you are a good candidate for a lip lift and whether a lip lift will help you achieve the results you are looking for. She will discuss the details of the lip lift with you and answer any questions you may have about the procedure and the recovery process.
