As we age, there is a gradual loss of elasticity in our facial skin and weakening of facial muscles. This causes the appearance of sagging skin, prominent wrinkles including smile and frown lines, and jowls. For some, these changes create a tired and more heavy facial appearance. A facelift can significantly rejuvenate your appearance without fundamentally changing your unique facial features.
Dr. Alisa Yamasaki is a Harvard-trained Facial Plastic Surgeon who sees patients in New Jersey & Philadelphia for facelift surgery and other surgical and nonsurgical options to recreate a more youthful facial aesthetic. Dr. Yamasaki is highly trained in a variety of facelift surgeries–including deep plane facelift–in which the soft tissue and facial structure is resuspended and excess skin and fat are removed from the face, jawline, and neck. This serves to re-establish the youthful features of the face in a way that is natural and does not appear “overdone.” Depending on each patient’s specific goals, Dr. Yamasaki may also recommend other cosmetic procedures.

What Is a Facelift (Rhytidectomy)?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a common cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and soft tissue from the face and repositions facial structures that have descended over time. This procedure can also address laxity along the jawline and upper neck to achieve a more youthful look. Often, a facelift is combined with a neck lift to comprehensively rejuvenate the structures of the neck along with the face and jawline.
Benefits of Facelift surgery
Dr. Yamasaki will carefully consider your personal goals to determine the best techniques that will result in the rejuvenation you are looking for. Dr. Yamasaki may combine a facelift with other procedures such as a neck lift, fat transfer, brow lift, and/or eyelid surgery for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

The Ideal Candidate for Facelift Surgery
You may be a candidate for a facelift if you have begun to notice signs of facial aging such as soft tissue sagging, volume loss, and skin laxity. A facelift can be a good option for many different types of facial structures, skin types, and skin tones, though patients with good skin elasticity tend to have longer lasting results. In general, the ideal candidate is:
- Healthy with no medical conditions that impact the body’s ability to heal after surgery
- Nonsmoker – smoking increases the risk of complications related to anesthesia as well as postoperative recovery
- A person with realistic expectations of surgery and prepared to undergo the surgical recovery process
A facelift is a highly individualized procedure and depends on the specific needs of each patient. Dr. Yamasaki will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Facelift Preparation in New Jersey & Philadelphia
- Stop smoking at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to your surgery
- Plan your transportation – you must be driven to and from your surgery
- On the night before surgery, you may receive instructions to avoid eating or drinking after midnight.
- On surgery day, avoid wearing contact lenses, jewelry, or makeup
- Wound care and dressing instructions will be provided to you depending on your specific surgery
Before & After Facelift
The Facelift Procedure (Rhytidectomy)
Dr. Yamasaki specializes in deep plane facelift surgery. A deep plane facelift is an advanced surgical technique that repositions and supports the deeper layers of the facial structure of the midface, nasolabial folds, jawline, and some of the upper neck. Incisions are hidden within natural facial creases and shadows, and these sites typically heal very well. With the right skill and technique, a deep plane facelift creates a natural-appearing lift that does not distort facial contours or create a “pulled” appearance. The deep plane facelift has the additional advantage of providing a long-lasting rejuvenating effect.
Combining a Neck Lift with a Facelift
For patients with neck laxity, excess neck fat, and/or chin fullness (e.g. “double chin”), a neck lift and/or neck liposuction is often recommended at the same time as a facelift. Neck lift incisions may be placed under the chin and/or behind the ears, depending on the patient’s neck anatomy and the location and degree of neck fullness. For neck liposuction, the incisions are minimal and placed strategically to be as camouflaged as possible. By addressing the neck at the same time as the facelift, the rejuvenating effect is augmented to achieve the best possible result.
Mini Facelift
Facelift Surgery Recovery
Swelling and bruising are common in the first few weeks after surgery. Pain is often managed with over-the-counter medications. You will be provided with a pressure dressing after the surgery in order to minimize postoperative swelling. It is also advisable to keep your head elevated and use ice/cold compresses to your face and neck in order to further reduce swelling, bruising, and soreness. Strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks after surgery.
Dr. Yamasaki will schedule a followup visit for the day after surgery followed by another postoperative appointment in the week after surgery for suture removal. Most patients can return to regular activities at 2 weeks after surgery, though complete recovery may take several weeks to a few months. Dr. Yamasaki will schedule regular follow-up appointments with you to monitor your healing. She will also discuss techniques to optimize scar healing and ensure you achieve the best possible results.
Facelift Surgery Cost
Dr. Yamasaki will review the treatment options with you during the consultation. Once your treatment plan is determined, Dr. Yamasaki’s office will review the details and costs of surgery with you. The cost of surgery includes the hospital facility cost, anesthesia fee, and surgeon’s fee. The cost can vary depending on your specific treatment plan, any other procedures that are planned, and the complexity/time required for the procedures.
A facelift is not covered by medical insurance, but financing options such as Care Credit are available.

Common Facelift Questions
Who is an ideal candidate for a facelift?
A facelift may be an option for anyone who is bothered by signs of facial aging such as loose skin, volume loss, soft tissue descent, and jowling. Though there are no set age cutoffs, as every individual ages differently, many patients begin experiencing bothersome signs of aging in their 40s and 50s.
An ideal candidate is someone who is healthy with no major medical problems and is a non-smoker. Those with healthy skin quality and good wound healing also have the best results. You should also be at a stable weight prior to proceeding with a facelift, as significant fluctuations in weight can impact your results. Patients with realistic goals and expectations of surgery and are prepared to undergo surgery and follow postoperative instructions are the patients who typically have the best results.
What are the potential risks associated with a facelift?
When will I see my facelift surgery results?
While you may begin to see some initial results within the first few weeks after surgery, the full benefits of a facelift typically become apparent after several months, once all swelling and bruising have fully subsided and scars have matured. Patience and proper care during the recovery process are key to achieving the best possible outcome.
You will have temporary swelling and bruising for the 2-3 weeks after surgery, at which point many patients have noticed their initial results and are comfortable enough to return to work. You will continue to see significant ongoing improvement in swelling by one month after facelift surgery. By 3 months, most of the swelling will have resolved and you will see some additional refinement in facial contours and fading of scars. For some patients, there may be some subtle swelling that continues until 6 months, at which time you will notice the extent of your new youthful and rejuvenated look. The specific timeline of healing is different for every patient and can vary based on factors such as age, overall health and lifestyle, genetics, skin quality, sun exposure, postoperative wound care, and extent of surgery or additional procedures performed at the same time as facelift.
How long will facelift results last?
Is facelift surgery right for me?
A facelift can offer life-changing facial rejuvenation for anyone desiring to correct the effects of aging. A facelift surgery may be a good option if you have concerns about sagging facial skin, jowls, deep facial creases, or frown lines that are bothersome to you. These signs of aging can give you a tired or unhappy appearance that does not reflect how you feel and can impact your confidence. A facelift can be performed regardless of age, as long as you are in good overall health, are a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations of surgery.
