Neck Lift in
New Jersey & Philadelphia

As we age, the effects of gravity combined with decreased skin elasticity can cause skin sagging, fatty deposits, and muscle banding under the chin and neck. Neck lift surgery can help to eliminate this issue while providing patients with a renewed sense of confidence. In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon, this is achieved by removing the excess skin and fat while also tightening the muscle and soft tissue support of the neck. Dr. Alisa Yamasaki, MD is a Harvard-trained Facial Plastic Surgeon with extensive skill in performing this procedure.

In some cases, Dr. Yamasaki may suggest other treatment options to best achieve a patient’s overall goals. Procedures often performed with neck lift include facelift, fat grafting, and liposuction as well as non-surgical options like dermal fillers (“filler”) and neuromodulator injections (e.g., Botox). Dr. Yamasaki carefully considers the individual objectives of each patient in order to create an individualized surgical plan with these goals in mind.

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgery that helps to remove a double chin and sagging skin in the jowls to improve the neck's appearance.

What Is A Neck Lift?

A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy or a platysmaplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that targets a “turkey neck” or “double chin” appearance by removing sagging skin while contributing to an overall more youthful appearance in the neck. A neck lift also tightens up one of the neck muscles – the platysma muscle.

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgery that helps to remove a double chin and/or sagging neck skin and fat to better define the contours of the neck. This procedure can take years off of your appearance and create a more refreshed and rejuvenated look. Oftentimes, a neck lift is performed together with other facial procedures such as a facelift, brow lift, or chin augmentation in order to maximize the youthful results. Dr. Yamasaki will help guide you through the different treatment options to decide what will work best for you.

The Ideal Candidate for a Neck Lift

The ideal candidate for a neck lift is a healthy individual who is bothered by a heavy or sagging appearance of their neck. Those who are non-smokers with good skin quality and no history of prominent scars (e.g. keloids) tend to heal best after surgery. Patients with a positive outlook and realistic expectations also tend to heal the best during the recovery process and have the greatest satisfaction with their results. It is best if patients are at a stable weight and are not planning future weight loss, as weight fluctuations can impact long term results.

The Neck Lift Procedure

Dr. Alisa Yamasaki customizes each treatment plan according to the needs and desires of the patient. A neck lift is typically an outpatient procedure that is often performed in the operating room, though this depends on other procedures that may be combined with the neck lift and is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Depending on the type of neck lift and extent of surgery required, the surgical incisions may be placed under the chin and/or in the hairline around the ears. Sometimes, additional tightening of the platysma neck muscle is required for the best results. It is often best to undergo procedures such as liposuction and facial fat grafting at the same time as a neck lift in order to optimize the facial contours and jawline. A temporary drain may be placed in the neck to drain fluid from the surgical site, with the end of the drain exiting behind the ear.

Neck lift incisions are placed strategically to ensure they remain hidden and camouflaged. These scars typically heal very well in a way that is not noticeable to others.

Neck Lift Recovery

Dr. Yamasaki will review the recovery timeline and post-surgery care instructions. It is important to follow these instructions to keep swelling to a minimum, avoid infection, and help the surgical sites to heal as best as possible. A pressure dressing will also be in place for the first few days, after which you will be encouraged to use it as much as possible for the first week or two. Ice and head elevation can be very helpful in this initial phase of recovery. You will notice that your neck will feel very tight in the first few weeks after surgery – this is normal and expected. You will be able to perform light activity but should avoid exercise for the first few weeks until you have been cleared by Dr. Yamasaki.

The recovery time varies from person to person, but most patients find that swelling and bruising go down significantly during the first 2 to 4 weeks after surgery. Residual bruising and swelling continues to improve after this time and are almost completely gone by 3 months. The final results will be visible after the healing process has finished by around 6 months.

Neck Lift Cost

The cost of a neck lift procedure varies depending on the extent and complexity of the surgery. Dr. Yamasaki’s office will explain these costs to you once your treatment plan is decided after the initial consultation. If other procedures are combined with the neck lift, this will impact the cost and may also impact the type of anesthesia that is required and where the procedure can take place.

These costs may include the anesthesia fee, facility fee, and surgical fees in addition to medical tests, prescriptions, and other costs of post-surgery care. A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure and therefore not covered by insurance. Be sure to ask Dr. Yamasaki’s office about financing options such as Care Credit during your initial consultation.

Common Neck Lift Questions

The ideal neck lift patient is a nonsmoker who is in good overall health. Skin with good elasticity and minimal sun damage tends to result in the best healing after surgery. Patients should also have clear goals for surgery and realistic expectations about what they will look like after the surgery.
There are always risks associated with any anesthesia or surgical procedure. There can be bruising and swelling after a neck lift as well as mild pain. Other potential risks include infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, and scar. It is normal to experience a sensation of neck tightness immediately after the surgery. Dr. Yamasaki will review the best techniques to optimize your recovery and ensure you achieve the best possible results. Selecting a highly qualified surgeon like Dr. Yamasaki can minimize the risks of experiencing unwanted side effects after your procedure.
The final results of a neck lift are typically noticeable between 3 to 6 months. However, you will notice an immediate improvement in the first days after surgery. As the swelling and bruising fade, the contours of your neck will become more and more defined until you achieve your final result.
Generally, the results from a neck lift will last 10 years or more. However, a neck lift does not stop the aging process. After surgery, your neck will continue to age along with the rest of your body. Each person ages at a different rate due to factors such as lifestyle as well as uncontrollable factors such as genetics. You can maintain the longevity of your results by minimizing sun exposure, maintaining a stable weight, and following healthy lifestyle habits.
If you are bothered by the sagging neck skin, excess neck fat, and/or neck muscle banding from a turkey neck or double chin, a neck lift may be a great solution. A neck lift will refine your facial contours and can help boost your self-confidence. If you are a generally healthy person with a positive attitude, a neck lift may be right for you.
